When’s Marvel? Right now. Marvel vs. Capcom 3 hit the FGC like a bombshell years ago, and despite some misgivings about its development time, the Ultimate revision is the one of record. In the world of tag fighters, there is none more prestigious, chaotic, and celebrated. But fifteen years after its launch, with no big patches in well over a decade and no new characters added since Ultimate, the game’s meta is starting to feel a bit stale to some, including Kyrie and Six.
The idea of adding new characters through mods is not a new one- but the game is such a tangle of spaghetti code that such a thing is easier said than done. Four years ago, a modder figured out how to trick the game into loading new data, and created “Wack-Bot.” A janky but fun mod that swapped Sentinel for a ridiculous custom version. It would be a while before modders figured out how to make more sophisticated characters. Then they learned how to add them as new slots, not just replacements. Then they learned how to add new animations to the game.
Today, Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3: Community Edition boasts a staggering 75 new characters across both Marvel and Capcom, with pulls you’d never guess. It’s got its own title screen, it’s got a great soundtrack. And it’s got us hooked.
