These days, it’s all about having extra legs. Think about it: more legs means more fun. Especially if they’re incoms! Though actually, that brings up an interesting point of discussion: the Trinity’s legs are remote weapons on wires. Classically, we call those “incoms.” But the show calls them “leg funnels.” There’s also the classic example of the Nu Gundam’s “fin funnels.” By the original definitions, if it’s disposable it’s a funnel, if it’s reusable it’s a bit, and if it’s on a wire it’s an incom. So the Nu Gundam’s fin funnels are bits!

Probably it is just a representation of how language evolves: over time, the distinction between “bits,” “funnels,” and “incoms” becomes less useful, and they simply all are called by the name of the most common form, the funnel. That’s my guess. Also it’s fun to shout “Funnels!”
