Today marks a significant change for me. Effective immediately, I am transitioning from Joseph Benjamin Unkle III to Jennifer Unkle, or Jen for short, and will be assuming she/her pronouns. My article bylines, as well as all future video/podcast content, will reflect this transition.
This change will undoubtedly be surprising to some, while others have known about this for quite a while. I doubt that my presence here will be vastly different: I’m still the same writer who loves disassembling and analyzing art, especially with friends. I only ask that you treat me with the same respect you gave me when I was still known as Ben.
There are numerous offline and social media friends that have been admirable as I’ve figured things out, but in particular, I’d like to thank Colin Dettmar, co-creator of this website. When I came out to him, he immediately did everything he could to accommodate me, and his persistence has helped me along during my weakest moments. He’s an insightful editor, a fantastic writer, and the best friend anyone could ever ask for.
I’ll have more to say on this subject in the future, as I figure out how to explain what led me down this road. For now, know that this is literally saving my life. After spending a decade in silent despair, much of my pain is fading away, and I’ve never been happier. I hope you’ll continue to join Colin and I as we continue to grow, and work to make Scanline Media the best it can be.
